February activities for kids

Just because it is cold and dark, it doesn't mean that we are turning all lazy and screen addicts! We have been playing and experimenting and present to you some of our favorite activities for February!

Making colourful ice candle holders

Easy to make and fun activity in two steps:
1. Mix water color with water and pour it in an old ice cube mold to make colorful ice cubes
2. Put the ice cubes with cold water in a plastic bowl sparing the middle with the help of another smaller bowl or glass and let it freeze

Cooking chocolate croissants for Valentine's Day

That is fun and the kids love cooking and then eating the chocolate left in the bowl:
1. Use either home-made or ready-to-use croissant dough
2. Cut it in triangles
3. Cover with chocolate/nutella filling and fold to shape a crescent form
4. Some egg on the top for nice color
5. In the oven for around 20 min

Drawing winter activities

Ask your child: 'What do you like doing in winter? - Can you draw it?' and you will be more than surprised.. Their imagination and skills can really help put together some amazing drawing while at the same time, reveal what makes them more excited and happy. What a creative way to help your kids express their emotions other than drawing?

'Do you want to build a snowman?'

Recycling
We recycled milk cartons to cute doll light houses, perfect for the kids' playroom and bedroom. We used the the napkin technique which we learned watching a video at the amazing blog aneraida. You may find all our recycling projects for kids, here.

Three basic categories of toys for preschoolers

Choosing toys for preschoolers - The 3 basic rules

Parents often ask me which toys can best stimulate their childrens' cognitive, emotional and motor skills. I answer: Choose passionately, choose wisely (based on the child's unique interests and abilities) and choose differently (try to expand the child's play spectrum)

Here are three basic categories of toys to choose for children of preschool age 2-6 year old.

1. Building and construction toys: Stimulate the child's imagination, creative thinking and problem solving skills. At the same time, the child improves its tactile perception and fine motor skills.
Building blocks, lego etc are some examples.

2. Art and craft kits: Drawing, coloring, creating from simple materials is a great challenge for the child's mind. Not only does this activity stimulates child's imagination and memory skills, it's one of the best ways for the child to express emotions. It also trains hand-eye coordination skills.

3. Material/toys for imaginative and pretend play: dolls, dollhouses and castles, dress-up accessories, cooking sets etc . Playing a character, a role is an amazing way for the child to express thoughts and emotions, to develop language and memory skills, and the best way to improve social interaction skills.

Have fun!

Kids drawings and sources of inspiration - Παιδικές ζωγραφιές και η πηγή έμπνευσής τους

We've enjoyed some great drawings during our Drawing Contest for 2012 and we couldn't help wondering what inspires these children to draw such beautiful pieces of art.

Experts suggest that there are four sources of inspiration for kids creating art:
  • Ordinary experience, which involves most of children's spontaneous drawing
  • Natural and constructed environment, which involves art pieces of observational work
  • Inner feelings and imagination, which involves expressive and imaginative work
  • Quest for order, which includes all careful and deliberate designs and patterns, intentionally-created art

Younger children use color most effectively to express feelings, while as they grow, children use color expressively, to create detailed art work. With experience, children use the different colors and tones to give a three-dimensional form to their design.

Memorable visual stimuli are a valuable source for insiration to artists of all ages. A visit to a museum, an exhibition, the cinema, the circus etc are stimulating ways of triggering creative responses.

Experts suggest that providing children with different materials and tools is an effective way to trigger a child's creativity. Younger children enjoy the tactile experience of paint, using a variety of instruments, i.e. brushes, sticks and sponges. Older children can get inspired by different types of drawing papers, surfaces like canvas, and materials such as pencils, water colors, oils.

One of our winners of the Drawing Contest 2012, Eleni, 9 years old, participated in the esa.kids drawing competition for kids in EU and won the 1st Prize! This is her drawing entitled 'The Moon'. Our congratulations to Eleni and a thank you to Eleni's mom for supporting her daughter's talent and for sharing Eleni's love for art with us!

Another winner of our Drawing Contest, Giannis, 10 years old, always carries a pocket notebook, as his mother told us, and through his pencil drawings he expresses his emotions. Here is a pencil drawing that he made after he hit his head at school. He even drew the ice that he was holding at the same time! A great example of a child expressing his emotions through drawing! Thank you Giannis' mom for sharing this beautiful picture and Giannis' amazing sketch with us!

Another winner of our Drawing Contest 2012, Nancy, won the prize 'Rising Star' with a drawing that she made at 3.8 years of age. We asked Nancy's mom the source that may have insired Nancy to draw such thick and long hair to the girl in the drawing and she answered that the source of insiration is herself as she also has very thick hair!

We'll be happy to receive more children's drawings! Send them to us on facebook with a short description of your child's source of inspiration.

Ποια είναι η πηγή έμπνευσης των παιδιών όταν ζωγραφίζουν;

Quality time with your child - Περάστε ποιοτικό χρόνο με το παιδί σας

The holiday season is a great time for family activities and a great chance to spend quality time with your child. Try to make the best of it! Here are my top holiday tips for all of us working parents:

  • Try to minimize the time you spend in front of your laptop and maximize the time you actually spend with your kid. By reducing the time you work at home by 50%, you win 50% of time with your child and he/she will appreciate this 100% more than your laptop or your boss!
  • Involve your kid to all family preparations for the holidays. Cooking, card making, decorating etc. It might take much more time to have it done, but it will give you and your child great memories to remember.
  • Find fun ways to get into the holiday spirit together! Read books, listen to music, dance, make/buy holiday clothing, play holiday games! Organize theme evenings, such as ‘decorating-the-Christmas-tree-evening’, an evening looking at your favorite holiday movies, an evening playing board games and eating home-made cookies.
  • Gift-creating and giving away is another great holiday activity to share with your kid. Children get their imagination going, their creativity sharpens and their fine motor skills improve. At the same time, they enjoy the feeling of sharing, creating and giving away. You may combine these activities with recycling and even teach your child how to be environmentally conscious.
  • The holiday season is a great time for changes. Pack away old clothes and toys and renew your kid’s room. Choose new colors and decorations together with your kid and have a wonderful weekend together turning the old room to a brand new playroom!

Happy holidays!

Have our children forgotten how to play free play? - Μήπως τα παιδιά μας έχουν ξεχάσει πώς να παίζουν ελεύθερο παιχνίδι;

Play is imperative for the development of healthy children. By definition, free play is intrinsically motivated and not provoked by instrumental goal-directed behaviour.

Free play is unorganized play. This means that it is a goal in itself. Free play does not have external rules or specific structure. Αctivities such as board games and organized sports are not considered free play.
There are three main types of free play:
  • physical activity play
  • object play, i.e. playing with toys or other objects
  • pretend play, i.e. imaginative, make-believe, fantasy or symbolic play

Latest research studies indicate that children's play has become more organised and that children spend less time in outdoor free play. Play experts and pediatricians express concerns that the lack of free play has a negative influence on children's development.

Why is free play important?

Free play helps children to develop physical and cognitive competences, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Free play promotes children's creativity and imagination.

Free play helps children build self-confidence and self-control, teaches them how to interact and maintain peer relationships.

Risk taking especially in outdoor free play helps children test their physical limits, develop their perceptual motor capacity, and learn to avoid and adjust to dangerous environments and activities.

Free play is therefore an important aspect in children's development and the time of play is valuable and thus should not be over-scheduled or restricted only to structured types of play.

Top five ideas for stimulating your kid’s imagination – Πέντε προτάσεις για παιχνίδι φαντασίας και νοητική ανάπτυξη

Stimulating imagination is important for the child’s cognitive development with special focus on executive functioning. Executive functioning is an individual's ability to organize thoughts and activities, prioritize tasks and make decisions, and is therefore important for self-regulation and successful adaptation in real-life. Impairment of executive functioning is seen in a number of developmental disorders, i.e. attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism. My list of top five ideas for stimulating your kid’s imagination:

1.      Spend time asking questions and waiting for answers. I.e. start telling a story and ask your kid to imagine what happens next. The golden rule is to wait for the child’s respond counting silently up to ten and then ask again or continue the storytelling.

2.      Encourage your child to create things from unconventional material.  I.e. a necklace from clothes pegs.

3.      In how many different ways can you/we..?’ walk, dance to this rhythm, draw a tree, write a name, make an omelette etc.

4.      Encourage pretend play. Trigger your child’s imagination with role-play scenarios with dolls, animals, imaginary toys etc.

5.      Play with the five senses. Choose a word –i.e. the sky, spring, happiness etc. - and ask your child to imagine how this word smells, looks, sounds, feels and tastes.
And remember, have fun!
